CANBERRA EDUCATION

Children generally start school at 5 or 6 years old. They attend primary school until they are 11 or 12 and then go on to secondary school.

Government Schools in the ACT have a well-rounded balance of traditional academic strengths as well as opportunities for intellectual, sporting, social and cultural development. Schools give priority enrolment to children living in their designated catchment area.

Independent Schools consists of schools from a range of different educational and religious philosophies. Fees vary.

Parish Catholic Schools are common in most areas.

International Education Unit (IEU) provides education for all ages, specifically designed to meet the needs of international students including English Language courses.

Pre–Schools The ACT Department of Education and Training provides one year of sessional preschool education for children of ACT residents in the year prior to entry into primary school.
