UTILITIES & PHONES

Australian mobile phone networks operate using GSM1800 and GSM900 as in NZ, UK and Europe. Mobile phones from Japan, Korea and America may not work in Australia. If your handset is compatible with Australian networks, you will only need to change your SIM card to set up an Australian mobile phone account. There are a number of providers that advertise prolifically who provide mobile services and handsets.

Australia's electricity supply runs at 240V 50Hz, with a uniquely configured three pin plug. Appliances from countries using electricity of a similar voltage, including most European countries and New Zealand, will run successfully in Australia, although you will need to use an adapter or have the plugs changed by an electrician.

Appliances from the USA and Japan (at 110V) will run with a transformer, which can be purchased readily at most electrical stores. This is advisable for small electronic devices but is not recommended for white goods, such as fridges and washing machines, as the cost of buying transformers to run appliances with an electric motor will almost always exceed the replacement cost. Rental is a cost effective option.
