MELBOURNE TRANSPORT

Public transport in Melbourne is characterised by the tram, electric trolley cars that run on rails through the city and inner suburbs. Melbourne also has trains and buses servicing all parts of the metropolitan area. The Metcard ticket can be used for all services.

City Circle Tram is a free service. Trams travel in both directions in a loop around the central business district every 10 minutes between 10.00am and 6.00pm.

NightRider buses operate from midnight on weekends and during special events or festivals. This bus service has its own tickets.

V/Line operates trains and buses to the major regional centres as well as interstate services.

Taxis can be hailed from the street, or engaged at ranks in and around the city. Tipping is not customary.

Driving the suburbs are easily accessed by major roads and freeways. The main freeways are connected through the city centre via the CityLink toll road. For information about driving, click here.

WHAT THE LOCALS SAY
"I love driving over the Westgate Bridge on a summer's day and looking down on Port Phillip Bay. Driving across the bridge on a stormy Melbourne day, on the other hand, is not quite so fun."
